Water Damage in the Kitchen

Dealing with Water Damage in the Kitchen

Dealing with water damage can be a daunting experience for homeowners, especially if it’s their first encounter with such an issue. Navigating the restoration process without proper guidance or relying on unclear information sources can be challenging. Bezruchuk Inc. recently undertook a kitchen remodeling project in Puyallup, WA, where homeowners faced water damage, resulting in a stunning transformation surpassing their expectations.

Important Decisions for Kitchen Restoration

At this stage, homeowners must make critical decisions affecting their kitchen and flooring restoration. This “Kitchen Remodel” article will delve into the choices made by the homeowner and the incredible transformation of their kitchen after water damage.

Choosing the Right Cabinets and Upgrades

The photos reveal the significant damage water caused to the hardwood floor, prompting its partial removal by the remediation company. The cabinets were also removed due to water damage. The original kitchen cabinets were no longer available, requiring a decision between custom cabinetry to match the existing kitchen or high-grade standard cabinetry. Custom cabinets can be costly and may not perfectly match. Thus, we opted to replace all cabinets with new ones of similar quality that the water-damaged kitchen had before flooding. The client also requested upgrades, including quartz countertops, glass cabinets, and hardwood flooring to replace the living room carpet.

Working with Insurance and Selecting Materials for the Kitchen

We submitted a detailed estimate to the insurance company and collaborated closely with them to make necessary adjustments to the bid or scope of work for the project’s completion. White Wood Shaker Cabinets with plywood boxes offer a significant upgrade from standard contractor-grade cabinets and have increased durability. Soft-closing doors and soft-close drawers in most base cabinets provide easier access compared to regular doors.

Timely Restoration of the Water Damage Process and Design Visualization

The remodeling process of the kitchen after water damage began approximately four weeks after the contract was signed with the homeowners, allowing us ample time to procure and deliver all required materials to the site. We recognize that water damage in the kitchen or bathroom can disrupt everyday tasks like cooking and washing dishes, so we always try to speed up the process if possible, starting earlier if materials are available.

Choosing a new style for your kitchen can be a daunting task, but with the help of online resources, homeowners can get a general idea of their desired kitchen design. Our designers work with clients to visualize the kitchen layout on paper and provide renderings before the work begins. We offered the homeowner samples of quartz countertops and backsplash options to finalize the design.

Project Completion and Final Touches

In this case, the project took about six weeks to complete. The first steps involved demolishing the existing cabinets and countertops and removing the tile backsplash. Our kitchen installation team generally completes cabinet installations of this size within 3 to 4 days. Subsequently, the quartz manufacturer took measurements for the new countertops, a process that can take up to two weeks, during which we focused on the flooring.

Obtaining hardwood flooring on time proved challenging due to national shortages, but we managed to have everything ready when the installation began. The team installed hardwood in the removed areas, added flooring to the living room, and completed a staircase added by the homeowner—all within two weeks. The flooring was finished by the time the countertops arrived.

Countertop installation took about one day, with attention to detail, such as matching stone stripes, ensuring seamless connections, and making the seams almost invisible. After installation, we added the finishing touch with a unique and beautiful custom 4×4 tile backsplash, creating a distinctive space. The range hood in the new kitchen was ordered from Hunt Wood Cabinets in Tacoma, WA, was custom-made to match the island cabinets and took around 3 to 4 weeks for delivery.

A Satisfying Transformation and Future Remodeling Projects

The end result was a delighted customer who, despite dealing with water damage, managed to transform their living space into a beautifully restored and enhanced kitchen with a contemporary look.
